A world away from the familiar heat and bustle of Bombay, Inspector Ghote arrives on his first visit to grey and chilly London.Determined not to put a foot wrong during his stay, he is highly embarrassed to be met at the airport by his wife's cousin's husband, noisily babbling of a missing niece and tearfully begging him to trace her.Much against his will, Ghote finds himself dividing his precious time in London between official note-taking at a conference and unofficial hunting for a provocative Indian teenager whom her friends call The Peacock.His quest takes him into parts of London whose seedy lawlessness rivals that of Bombay... and into contact with Londoners who are not at all the polite, cultured people he imagined them to be.
