Plot

Ten years on from his misadventures in Out of the Sun, Harry Barnett is leading a contented life in Vancouver with his wife and daughter. Back in England to clear his recently deceased mother's home, Harry bumps into old acquaintances from his National Service days. As RAF conscripts in 1955, they had all been guinea pigs in a psychological experiment at a Scottish castle. When Harry is invited to attend a fiftieth anniversary reunion he decides to go along. The apparent suicide of one of their number even before the train has reached its destination shocks them all and soon after their arrival another comrade dies in suspicious circumstances. There are sinister differences of recollection about unexplained events at the castle back in the 1950s and Harry and Barry find themselves plunged into a struggle for their survival - and for possession of an extraordinary and dangerous secret, Knowledge of which may make this their last reunion.
