Plot

Earth is rebuilt using a newly discovered element called bulerite, which makes enormous cities and unprecedented energy generation commonplace - but which then becomes unstable and destroys the planet. Artificial worlds constructed inside hollowed-out asteroids carry human survivors off into the galaxy before one, the original "macrolife" environment called Asterome, returns to Earth's solar system a thousand years after the great catastrophe - just in time to meet a new Earthly society, and the alien emissary they've been preparing to receive. Billions of years in the future, as the universe faces extinction in a "great crunch," macrolife's galaxies-spanning supermind re-creates a human individual to help lead the mass consciousness that macrolife has become into a new universe and a fresh future.
