The second volume of The Penguin Companion deals with all the literatures of Europe with the exceptions of Britain and the ancient classical world. The general reader who is interested in foreign literatures, either in the original or in translation, will find this guide to French, Italian, German, Spanish, Russian, Scandinavian and other writing as useful as will the student of modern languages or comparative literature. Philosophers, scientists and historians have been included in this volume, in addition to purely literary figures, whenever their connection with literature has been demonstrably close. There is also an index of authors, classified chronologically and by language. THE PENGUIN COMPANION TO LITERATURE This new reference work signposts all the important literatures of the ancient and modern world. The standard entries are arranged alphabetically by authors and consist of biographical sketches, critical assessments and selective bibliographies of editions, translations in English, biographies, critical studies, etc. In addition there are entries describing literary forms and genres, styles and schools, conventions and traditions, particularly where these are likely to be unfamiliar to Western readers.
