Plot

Colleen McCullough's third novel is set on one of the Pacific islands at the end of the Second World War. Honour Langtry has been trusted with sole charge of Ward X, whose five inmates have had mental breakdowns in combat and each of whom, in his own way, is in love with Honour. Into their world comes a sixth patient, Sergeant Wilson who causes a highly charged emotional atmosphere and leads Honour to tragedy trapped between this obsession and her duty.
