For nearly two decades he strode the world stage like a colossus - loved and despised, venerated and feared. From his birth on the rugged island of Corsica to his final exile on the godforsaken island of St. Helena, Napoleon brings this extraordinary figure to life.
Napoleon bears passionate witness to a man whose charisma swayed an empire and sparked his exalted belief in his own destiny. He is a figure riddled with contradictions that are the essence of his glory and undoing: his youthful enthusiasm for the ideals of the French Revolution did not prevent him from crowning himself Emperor. His passionate love of Josephine did not prevent him from divorcing her to marry the eighteen-year-old Archduchess of Austria. His military genius did not save him from the disastrous invasion of Russia. His love of France was so compromised by his notions of personal glory that he repeatedly plunged his beloved country into war. Framed by the grand sweep of history, woven from intimate accounts of and by the man himself, Napoleon is a tale as grand as any novel, a story of passion, vaunting ambition, and pride ending in exile and loss.
Napoleon: Episode 1 talks about his upbringing on the island of Corisica. It talks about his struggles being forced to go school in France. It talks about the impact the French Revolution had on the young Napoleon. After graduating from the Royal Military College he returns to Corsica to help establish himself them but instead gets exiled from his own country by it's leaders. Talks about his involvement tin the battle of Toulon and his defeat of the English there. Talks about is courtship with Josephine and their marriage. Talks about how he was promoted to Brig. General after disrupting the civil riots in Paris in 1795. It ends with his defeat of the Austrians and the Piedmonts at the Battle of Lodi.
This episode illustrates that Napoleon was not the megalomaniac that he is often depicted due to the fact that he believed in justice for all and tolerance of all religions. We see here some of his accomplishments despite some violent opposition from much of Europe. He gave credit and promotions where it was due even to folk that were low-born.
