The Allahabad Kumbh Mela in India on January 2001 was the final mela in a series of 12 full cycles: the "Maha Kumbh Mela" that occurs once every 144 years. This increased spiritual power drew an estimated 70 million people to encampments on the sand over 44 days, making this celebratory event the largest single gathering of humanity in recorded history.
