The Nun's Story

This is the story of Gabrielle Van Der Mal (Audrey Hepburn). She joins a convent to become a nun and is named Sister Luke. After completing her studies in medicine, she wants to go to Congo to serve people but is instead sent to a sanitarium to work. After being attacked by a patient in sanitarium she is assigned to Congo but finds that she is working in the European rather than the native hospital. There she meets Dr. Fortunati (Peter Finch). She is forced to return to Belgium with a benefactor and she was not able to go back to Congo again. Upon the outbreak of World War II, she tries being neutral as her Order required, but this becomes impossible when her father (Dean Jagger) is killed by the Nazis. She has difficulty accepting the neutrality of her Order and chooses to leave the Order permanently.
