When fellow writer, of the New York Chronicle, Tess Harding (Katharine Hepburn) makes a statement that baseball should be canceled until the war ends, sports writer Sam Craig (Spencer Tracy) chastises Tess in his spots column. In turn Tess goes after Sam in her political column. Irritated by the two their boss Clayton (Reginald Owen) orders them to settle their difference without using the newspaper as the platform. Sam and Tess are from two different worlds. Sam is a down to earth type, while Tess is an internationally known political activist and feminist. But, Tess catches Sam’s romantic eye when he watches Tess adjust her stockings. Tess and Sam start falling in love and Tess is finding it easier to fit into Sam’s world as she easily makes friends with unruly fans at a baseball game. Sam on the other hand, is finding it difficult to fit into Tess’s hectic life and the meddlesome Gerald Howe (Dan Tobin), Tess’s male secretary. Sam and Tess decide to get married and what follows is the tumultuous union of opposite attracting from the wedding day, to a humorous kitchen escape and Gerald beginning tossed out on his ear.
