When a satellite fails to achieve orbit, due to mysteriously picking up mass in space, the Foundation for Oceanic Research is brought in to recover it, with Mark's aid. But carried back to Earth aboard the satellite are a race of sentient spores that only Mark's enhanced senses can see.
