In the Dominican Republic of 1949, Minerva Mirabal turns down the advances of President Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, leading to an act of retaliation against Minerva's father, Don Enrique, who is locked up and tortured. As the family fights for his release, Minerva's childhood friend Arantxa catches the attention of a regime bigwig. In 1999, Arantxa is tracked down by Spanish writer Pilar Macías.

Minerva bargains for the release of her father while the rest of the family returns to Salcedo. Arantxa crosses paths with Trujillo at the Spanish embassy, and approaches the dictator with the hope of convincing him to release Don Enrique; Trujillo proposes a "meeting" to discuss the matter with her. In 1999, Arantxa dodges Pilar's questions - she's unwilling to dig up the past.

As Don Enrique recovers from a stroke, the family store faces backlash from the community. Minerva responds to a proposal from Simón's proposal that would potentially take her away from the Dominican Republic, and her father. Arantxa decides to quit her job at the hotel and breaks up with her boyfriend Marcos. In 1999, Pilar looks to the Dominican Republic of the 1940s for answers.

Minerva seizes on an opportunity to enroll in law school while an ailing Don Enrique encourages his daughter. Minerva arrives at Club Caribe in search of Arantxa, who invites her to stay in lodgings provided by Petán, but the old friends are growing apart on account of Arantxa's ties to the regime. In 1999, Arantxa makes a last-ditch effort to get Arantxa to continue the interview.

Minerva receives a top score on her entrance exam, all but assuring that the board of admissions will be forced to admit her. After her first night as the lead dancer, Arantxa reconnects with Trujillo - the dancer and the dictator begin a love affair. In law school, Minerva befriends fellow student Pierre. In 1999, Pilar pleads with Arantxa to continue the interview.

The regime targets the Mirabals once again; Pilar convinces Arantxa to tell her story in 1999.

Héctor Trujillo wins the election with 100% of the votes. Morales negotiates a hefty price to secure the release of Don Enrique. Minerva and Pierre are arrested in a protest against the regime; Pierre, for his part, is badly beaten. Arantxa finds herself in a leading role on the regime's new channel. In 1999, Arantxa pushes to continue with the interview despite health issues.

The family learns the truth about the decline in Don Enrique's health; with his last words, Don Enrique encourages his daughter to fight for what's right, but she faces yet another setback in her dream to become a lawyer. Meanwhile, Arantxa stars in "The Gipsy Show " and later, sparks fly between Arantxa and a young boxer. In 1999, Pilar's efforts to dig up the truth begin to pay off.

Arantxa experiences burnout from the rigorous demands of "The Gipsy Show" and maintaining appearances with the regime; Trujillo, distrustful of his lover and propaganda medium, orders her to be surveilled. Minerva is readmitted to law school, and later has a parting of ways with Pierre. Divisions in the opposition movement pave the way for an attack on "Generalísimo."

The mood shifts in the region on the success of the Cuban revolution. Minerva and Manolo raise their two children in Monte Cristi; there, they are visited by old companions, including Pierre, who inform them of a plot to oust Trujillo. Petán reveals his true feelings to Arantxa, and proposes to take her away from the violence. In 1999, Arantxa anxiously weighs over an invitation to New York.

With the media under their control, the regime boasts of its defeat of the revolutionaries. In Monte Cristi, Minerva and Manolo visit a severely-injured Pierre at a rebel hideout. Arantxa goes off script on television, leading to violent retribution from Trujillo. The "June 14" movement is born. 1999: Arantxa has an emotional reunion in New York with her old friend Julio César.

The Mirabal sisters are released, as the regime faces pressure from the OAS; although the women are freed, their husbands are held captive in Puerto Plata. The decision to visit the men - against their mother's wishes - leaves the women vulnerable. Arantxa learns about a tragedy just as she is about to escape the country. 1999: Arantxa attends Pilar's book launch in New York, as does Dedé Mirabal.

Arantxa dances in honor of the "Butterflies" on television and sparks outrage amongst the regime supporters. The surveillance of Arantxa leads Jimmy Alves to target Asier. The commando brings an end to the ruthless dictator's 30-year reign of terror. November 25, 1999: Pilar, Dedé Mirabal (Minerva's daughter) and Arantxa attend an event in New York, where Dedé learns of Arantxa's bravery.
