Much has changed in Vicky's life, both professionally and privately. She is now a department manager at the thriving department store and with Wilhelm she has a new partner by her side.

Vicky has said yes to Wilhelm's proposal. Harry asks Vicky to get in touch with their shared daughter Hanni, but Vicky refuses him this. Meanwhile, Arthur works on expanding the department store.

Jazz musician Harry shifts to popular music to increase his chances of success. Gerd's promotion in Nazi paramilitary organization SA coincides with the grand opening of a department store during the Christmas season.

At Helene's burial, Harry is paralyzed. Helene's father accuses Harry of causing her death, and it becomes too much for him. He no longer sees any meaning or joy in anything. But then Vicky gets an idea.

In 1930s Germany, a department store owner must comply with the regime's anti-Semitic laws, dismissing Jewish staff. His new manager readily enforces the unjust rules, leading to property damage and customer loss.

A gramophone singer's performances are halted until he plays at a bar stormed by Nazis abducting the proprietor. A Jewish family relinquishes their store, bids moving goodbyes, and departs for New York.
