Growing up as a foster child among a family of thieves, orphan Sue Trinder hopes to pay back that kindness by playing a key role in a swindle scheme devised by their leader, who is planning to con a fortune out of the naive Maud Lilly.
Conman Richard Rivers enlists the help of petty thief Sue Trinder in his plot to rob a wealthy heiress.
Sue knows that she just cannot tell Maud the truth: that she loves her, or that Rivers is planning to send her to a madhouse.
While Sue is imprisoned in the madhouse, Maud finds out the truth. Sue manages to escape but wants revenge on Maud.
