Superman has saved the city of Metropolis from numerous threats recently, that the citizens celebrate by throwing a big parade in his honor. Meanwhile, an actor portraying the Man of Steel gets his wish to become Superman when Mr. Mxyzptlk arrives for the festivities. The real Superman wants no part of the Imp's hijinks, but we begin to understand the bond that Mxy feels towards Kal-El.
