Gilmore Girls
Perennially one of the WB's highest-rated series, Gilmore Girls hit its creative high point to date with its stellar fifth season, which started out with young Rory (Alexis Bledel) feeling the fallout of doing something terribly non-Rory-like: sleeping with Dean (Jared Padalecki), her married ex-boyfriend. Rory's indulgence in adultery put, for the first time, a serious, sharp wedge in her relationship with her mother, Lorelai (Lauren Graham), who was both shocked by her daughter's behavior and worried Rory would repeat the mistakes Lorelai made at her age. But while Rory jetted off to Europe with her grandmother (Kelly Bishop) for the summer, Lorelai finally got her relationship with diner owner Luke (Scott Patterson) into a serious groove, starting with an official (and incredibly sweet) first date and others that involved, if you can believe it, a Swedish Pippi Longstocking movie. And as Lorelai navigated romantic terrain in Stars Hollow (terrain that of course did not run smooth), Rory found life more complex in her second year at Yale, as her relationship with Dean became increasingly strained. Not only that, she found her attention turned towards preppy Logan (Matt Czurchy), a spoiled rich kid who represented everything Rory couldn't stand--and was of course immediately attracted to. Little did Rory know that Logan's entrance into her life, and her interaction with his family, would be the catalyst for one of the most momentous decisions she would ever make.
With this season of Gilmore Girls, creative forces Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino finally found a way to make the Stars Hollow-Yale dichotomy work perfectly, as each location still stood alone but had decided repercussions on the other. Gone were freshman-year anxieties for Rory and in their place were more adult romantic concerns as well as a class consciousness that, for the first serious time, found Rory on the side of the haves and not the have-nots. While the Rory-Dean drama played itself out nicely and succinctly, it was the devilish Logan who lit a fire underneath this Gilmore girl; the episode "You Jump, I Jump, Jack" was a lovely twist on the '30s romantic comedies that found rich folk at play with words and deeds. Bledel started to fully blossom as Rory grew from ingénue to leading lady, and she was matched peerlessly by Graham, whose passion, anger, stubbornness, and ravishing beauty all came to a head in "Wedding Bell Blues," which featured her two greatest nemeses: her mother and Rory's dad, Christopher (David Sutcliffe). The show's trademark eccentricities were all in place--including a Pulp Fiction party and an elementary school production of Fiddler on the Roof, among other things--but it mined the best drama of its run with the season's last four episodes, which found Rory's confidence shaken to the core. To give any of the proceedings away would spoil the drama, but suffice it to say you will be glued to the TV for this season's final four hours; it's Gilmore Girls at its phenomenal best. --Mark Englehart
Still at odds with her mother, Rory seeks out Lane's perspective and decides to talk to Dean. Lorelai and Luke clarify their new relationship while Emily announces she and Richard have separated.
With tensions still high with her daughter, Lorelai takes it out on the inn's employees till Sookie asks her to cool off. Realizing she was wrong, Rory writes Dean a letter, leading to unexpected trouble. Lane has feelings for Zack.
Luke and Lorelai date officially for the first time. Paris mourns her late boyfriend. Rory meets a new guy.
Jackson decides to run for town selectman; Lorelai and Sookie help him campaign. Rory and Dean struggle to work things out.
Jackson is overwhelmed by the demands of his new job. Lorelai and Rory attempt to bring Richard and Emily back together. With Dean back in the picture, Lorelai tries to make things right with dinner and a movie.
Rory struggles to find a story worth pursuing for the student newspaper. The Dragonfly Inn's accountant suggests dropping the lunch menu to avoid losing money, which upsets Sookie. Christopher needs help babysitting.
When Emily discovers that Lorelai is dating Luke, she insists he come to dinner. Not to be outdone, Richard invites Luke to a game of golf, and Luke finds himself overwhelmed by the strength of the elder Gilmores' personalities.
Luke tries to smooth things over with Liz and TJ when they stress out about buying a house in Stars Hollow. When Emily learns Rory and Dean are dating again, she calls a temporary truce with Richard to throw a party to introduce Rory to more suitable men. Dean realizes he isn't one of them, and Logan realizes he is.
Jackson has his hands full between Sookie's food cravings and his town selectman duties. Lorelai invites Christopher to lunch, but Rory tells him off and asks Lorelai what Luke thinks of her and Christopher having lunch. Emily decides she's still a viable commodity and asks Lorelai to help her start dating.
Rory hosts a Chilton student for a few days at Yale. Paris dates again. Lorelai learns about Luke's dark day. Logan works his way into Rory's life. Rory and Richard pull a prank.
Rory continues to give her dad the cold shoulder until she learns his father has passed away. Lorelai spends time comforting Christopher but keeps it from Luke, and Richard and Emily find a lost dog.
Richard gets jealous and comes to a realization after finding out who Emily is dating. Rory offers to help Logan with an article, but she has ulterior motives. Tensions arise when Lane and Zack attend a Kim Family tradition. A "ghost" haunts the Dragon Fly. Emily has a time-sensitive warning for Christopher.
Emily and Richard renew their vows. Rory experimentally kisses Logan, triggering a turf battle between Luke and her father Chris, who insists that Lorelai's attachment to Luke is temporary, because Emily has convinced Chris that he and Lorelai are meant for each other.
After all the drama at the wedding, Lorelai is afraid she'll lose Luke, who needs time to process what's happened and finally decides her family and history may be too much for him. She takes to her bed to wallow where Rory tends to her needs while the town takes sides.
Lorelai is hurt again when she realizes Luke has moved his boat from her garage without even telling her. Luke helps the school kids build the sets for their Fiddler on the Roof play in hopes of working with Lorelai who he is realizing he misses. Rory tries to make up with Marty by hosting a movie night, but Logan interferes.
Luke, upset and missing Lorelai, begins to take it out on his customers. Lane realizes her mom is in her head, and with the grandparents back from their second honeymoon Rory makes it clear that Friday night dinners are just dinner and nothing more.
Rory and Logan's casual dating situation gets more complicated when Rory spots Logan with another girl and her jealousy sets in. Rory decides to go to a party with a guy she barely knows, which makes Logan jealous. Luke and Lorelai resolve things.
Luke volunteers to help convert old man Twickum's house into a museum just to see if he can buy it. Meanwhile with the help of some Founder's day punch, Lane, Paris and Rory commiserate about their love lives. Lorelai forgets to keep some news off the record.
After realizing that casual dating isn't for her, Rory tries to break things off with Logan, causing him to agree to see her exclusively. Logan's family isn't happy about the match despite Rory's breeding. Luke's patience is tried as he takes over as temporary chef at the Dragonfly.
Taylor agrees the museum is a bust. Lorelai meets to discuss selling the Dragonfly while Rory starts her new internship with Logan's father. Friday night dinner with the grandparents goes great for Logan and Rory while Lorelai, after begging to attend, gets the cold shoulder.
The article about the Dragonfly comes out and Luke and Lorelai celebrate. Sookie goes into labor. Logan's dad Mitchum reviews Rory's work and Luke has competition from an unlikely source to buy the Twickham house.
Rescuing Rory after a night of reckless behavior with Logan, Lorelai is shocked to hear her daughter's plans for the future. Lorelai first turns to Richard and Emily for help, but soon realizes that Luke is the only person she can trust.
