Thus, we proposed to write a book that would be accessible to the beginning therapist, would deal with the nuts-and-bolts of therapy as well as with the concepts that give a framework for the therapy, and would adhere to what we believe are sound principles: the principles of an autonomous psychotherapy (to use T. Szasz's, 1974a, apt phrase). In sum, this is a book on the technique of psychoanalytic therapy. We must also admit that this book by itself is not sufficient to teach anyone how to do psychotherapy. We expect that this book will be used concurrently with actual experience as a therapist and that its necessarily skeletal character will be fleshed out by material from the reader's practical experience.
