In this recording, he learns that he was one of two candidates for Green Lantern, and he became the hero because he was closer to Abin Sur at the time of selection. The other candidate is a physical education teacher named Guy Gardner. The Guardians give Hal the chance to see what Guy's career would have been like had he been given the ring.
