When fighting the Serpent Society, the Thing loses one of his scales. This is the latest impetus to drive Reed to find a way to cure him. He conceives a project for sending probes into alternate dimensions to collect the necessary data, but Nick Fury unilaterally denies funding. Reed sends the probes anyway, just before the Baxter Building has some unexpected visitors.
