Plot

In his preface to the book author Jacob J. Enz argues that "it is high time to set aside the BB-gun method of the proof-texting, inner-canon approach to the presentation of biblical pacifism and draw up the heavy artillery of the insights which the very substructure of biblical thought brings to bear upon a question so vital to the church, to say nothing about civilization itself." Author Enz goes on to do exactly that in the pages following, reflecting not only a passion for the subject matter but a depth and breadth of biblical knowledge and study that makes refutation difficult. This book is the substance of the Menno Simons Lectures as originally delivered at Bethel College, North Newton, Kansas, in 1957; its substance, however, has proven to be rather timeless.
