Plot

First published in 1832 by Joseph Funk of the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, this popular shape-note hymnbook has enjoyed sales of nearly 100,000 copies. This new edition is built on the 12th edition (1866), the first 4-part edition. It includes materials added in later editions, as well as a section of three-part tunes from the early editions. In addition, hundreds of typesetting errors have been corrected. Funk was known as "the father of music" in northern Virginia. This beloved hymnbook is still used widely today by singings and song groups. This new edition brings to the public the best of this rich tradition in music.
