Galaxy Express 999
Galaxy Expres is a manga written and drawn by Leiji Matsumoto, as well as various anime films and TV series based on it. It is set in a space-faring, high-tech future in which humans have learned how to transfer their consciousnesses (but not their consciences) into mechanical bodies, thus achieving practical immortality.
The manga won the Shogakukan Manga Award for shōnen in 1978.[6] The anime series won the Animage Anime Grand Prix prize in 1981. [1]
Tetsuro Hoshino's life changes forever: his mother is murdered, and he is rescued and taken on board the Galaxy Express 999 by the mysterious woman Maetel.
On the planet Mars, Tetsuro is accosted by the bandit Geronimo, who wants his pass to the Express.
On the planet Titan, Maetel is captured by machine men. Meanwhile, Tetsuro befriends Crystal Clare, a waitress on the 999 whose body is made of glass.
The great bandit Antares comes on board the 999 and takes Tetsuro hostage to get back to his home.
The planet Pluto is a graveyard for the human bodies people sacrificed to become machine men. Its machine caretaker, Shadow, desires Tetsuro to find and retrieve her own human body.
The 999 arrives at the Comet Library, the location of every book published and recorded.
The 999 encounters the remains of the missing Express 333, and its surviving passenger, Ryuzu... who killed off everyone aboard.
Ryuzu takes Tetsuro hostage, and tells him her story of tragedy and abandonment.
The planet Trader is a junction for Galaxy Expresses. There Tetsuro meets and befriends Hanako, a destitute young girl.
Hanako takes Tetsuro to the planet Wildflower, where her parents reside. She tells them Tetsuro is her fiancé, soon to be married... something he doesn't know about.
The planet Nuruba is inhabited by eternal, shape-shifting formless blobs. Two of them kidnap Tetsuro and Maetel and impersonate them to get on the 999.
The 999 arrives on a planet beset by a petrification cloud, a phenomenon that turns everything living to stone. The only survivor is a warrior, who kidnaps Tetsuro to try and get on the train.
Raiders come to the planet, whose petrified people are unable to fight back. Tetsuro and Maetel join forces with the warrior to protect his world.
The Dual Planets is a world populated by machine people. One of them, Lala, kidnaps Tetsuro so that she can have his body.
On a dark foggy planet, its resident the Black Knight pursues Tetsuro to have his companionship, by hook or crook.
The latest planet the 999 visits is populated by people who can glow in the dark. An animator named Freiya, an outcast who cannot glow, is befriended by Tetsuro.
The 999 arrives on a planet where every single organism has been encased in armour to make it strong.
On a mud planet, Tetsuro encounters a woman made of mud named Maetel, who wants to come on board the 999.
The 999 takes a rest stop aboard the planet Confession, a planet said to be free of evils. Unfortunately, when a crime is discovered, the planet committee wishes to silence its witnesses.
The 999 arrives at a planet full of professional experts, one of whom kidnaps Tetsuro to train him in his skills.
As the 999 travels through a planet full of leaves, Tetsuro meets and befriends an artist with a wooden body.
The 999 is attacked by the space pirate queen Emeraldas.
The Battle-Torn planet is a world divided in half, between advanced and primitive beings. The primitives want Maetel to be their queen, and Tetsuro to be their sacrifice.
The 999 encounters a planet that can travel through dimensions. Its ruler, Egoterina, is mentally unstable and captures Tetsuro, Maetel and the Conductor.
On a heavily industrial world, the freedom fighter Clowmaria is trying to halt industry for the sake of conservation. As a fugitive, she seeks escape on the 999.
On a world of skeletons, Tetsuro meets Horohoro, a poor skeleton who has very little bones in his body.
At the Snow Capital, Tetsuro gives food to a poor slum girl. He is later kidnapped by her mother to be made into food to feed her daughter.
On the planet Mirage, an old lonely writer steals Tetsuro's pass and tries to board the 999.
Sakezan, the ruler of a jungle world, captures Maetel to make her his slave.
The planet Filament is inhabited by phantoms. One of them wants her son to possess Tetsuro so that he can get a mechanical body.
The 999 arrives at a planet where people are passionate and don't hide their emotions.
A fellow passenger, Edmund, discovers his homeworld is completely ruined due to the government selling off its bits of land.
On the planet Ulatores, the 999 has a breakdown. Consequently, Tetsuro is kidnapped by a machine woman who wants to be his surrogate mother.
The 999 arrives on a world where a machine woman plates everything - including living organisms - in gold. A young boy wants this treatment to be accepted by his golden girlfriend.
Tetsuro joins a band of revolutionaries intent on stopping the machine woman.

The 999 arrives at the planet Arashigaoka. An ailing father steals Tetsuro's pass to leave his son Kira behind, not wanting to be a burden to him.
At Deadwood Mountain, Prider the singer boards the 999 to become famous. The 999 is attacked by the Valkyries, a trio of witches.
The 999's passengers are captured and brought before the head Valkyrie, whose daughters were killed by mechanical people.
A passenger forces the 999 to go to his planet, El Alamein, a desert planet filled with war machines.
The 999 arrives at Rifle Grenade, a planet that makes its slaves fight each other for sport. One of the slaves, Zeda, manages to escape.
Zeda unites the slaves in a bid for freedom.
The 999 arrives on a planet filled with kind, hardworking people.
The 999 arrives at the Ghost Tunnel, an artificial black hole. Its owner, Eroze, demands Tetsuro's companionship.

The cocoon breaks open to reveal baby creatures, which invade the 999.
The 999 arrives on a planet inhabited by savage cavemen and intelligent dinosaurs. A friendly dinosaur named Tiny tries to board the 999.
Tiny rescues Tetsuro and Maetel when they are captured by the cave people.
At the world of Footsteps Village, Tetsuro encounters a ghost with a comic strip.
The Idle One's Mirror is a world full of lazy fat people who use machines continuously. One of them tries to leave for a new, non-machine world.
The 999 lands in complete secrecy at the Tomorrow Planet, whose inhabitants have no knowledge of space travel. One of them learns of the train and steals Tetsuro's pass.
Stranded on the Tomorrow Planet, Tetsuro gets a job to look after himself and Maetel.
At the City of Night, a dangerous dinosaur named Heron lives in a nearby lake. Tetsuro discovers the animal is in fact friendly, but will he be believed?
