Top of the Lake
"Top of the Lake" is original drama at its finest, bringing to screen a unique landscape – remote, mountainous New Zealand – in a powerful and haunting story about our search for happiness in a paradise where honest work is hard to find.
A twelve-year-old girl stands chest deep in a frozen lake. She is five months pregnant, and she won't say who the father is, insisting it was 'no one'. Then she disappears. Robin Griffin, the investigating detective, will find this the case that tests her to her limits. In the search for Tui she will first have to find herself.
In New Zealand's rugged and mountainous South Island, an unripe 12-year-old pregnant girl is found up to her chest in the lake's glacial waters. She is already five months pregnant, and she keeps the father's name to herself.
Unexpectedly, Tui has mysteriously disappeared, so Robin organises a thorough investigation focusing on possible suspects and someone with a rather dark history, while in the meantime, she pays a visit to Matt who is strangely indifferent.
The search for missing Tui continues under GJ's ominous prophecies, fruitless investigations and elusive secrets, while in the meantime, the gruesome finding of a dead man and a concealed small grave will upset Robin.
Robin, who is becoming obsessed with missing-Tui's case, is forced to unearth her painful past. Meanwhile, there is an outburst of violence in Paradise and an incident of suppressed aggression that will bear unforeseen results.
Unexpectedly, Al puts Robin back on Tui's case, and, Johnno is forced to make a sad disclosure as Jude is facing imminent death, while at the same time, the cryptic Jamie is as close as an oyster.
Miraculously, Tui who is alive returns to the safety of Paradise, while Matt, who takes matters into his own hands combing the mountains with a posse of hand-picked men, seems to be ultimately willing to make a startling confession.
Robin is squashed under the burden of Matt's disclosures, nevertheless, she will gather up her remaining strength for a valiant ultimate effort to locate Tui, utterly unprepared however for the inconceivable truth that lies before her.
