Plot

All his life, schoolteacher David Fitzgerald has wanted to live up to the legacy left by his war-hero father, and one day he gets his chance. There is an explosion on a bus, and in a moment of unexpected courage he saves the life of a student onboard. Suddenly, David is a local celebrity - a capital-h Hero. His son idolizes him. His students listen to him. The President mentions him in a speech. The news crews film him in the classroom. His unremarkable life feels, for a day, extraordinary. But then everything changes. The police begin to suspect that David planted the bomb to make himself heroic. And in the whiplash that follows, he becomes the target of a federal investigation and the prey of the media wolf pack. His home is torn apart, his livelihood is taken away, and he may even lose custody of his son. In the midst of all this, he learns that the real bombers are getting ready to strike again, on a far more deadly scale.
