In July 1967, when she waas seventeen, Joni Eareckson dived into Chesapeake Bay and broke her neck; since then she has been a quadriplegic, confined to life in a wheelchair. In her first book, Joni, she told the story of her accident and her subsequent struggle to accept her handicap.
As a result of that first book, Joni received thousands of letters from readers who identified with her bouts of depression, despair, and loneliness - letters from hurting people all over the world. Out of this came a sense of responsibility to respond to others and, thus, this book.
In A Step Further, Joni, with the assistance of her good friend and spiritual mentor, Steve Estes, relates more of her life as a quadriplegic, her struggles and lessons, her downfalls and victories. It is an intensely personal story, telling honestly how God has used circumstances, individuals, and events to reveal more of Himself in her. It is a moving book, clearly evidencing the maturity of a young worman to whom God is God. From her poignant I-wish-I-had-my-hands days to the triumphant note sounded in the final chapter, "Heaven," Joni Eareckson reveals a real person who has opened herself up not only to God, but to others.
