Colorful. Proud. Tall. Lean. Warriors. Animal herders. All describe the Maasai, one of Africa’s best-known tribal people. A semi nomadic tribe, they live in parts of Kenya and Tanzania, moving as necessary to find water for their herds. While at one time the Maasai had many square miles of grassland to roam freely with their herds, today they find themselves increasingly hemmed in, with cities like Nairobi sprawling outward and other lands being designated as national preserves and parks.
God is using cultural, physical, and political changes among the Maasai to open their eyes to the truth of His Word. Today about 10 percent of the Maasai in Kenya are Christians. Building upon many years of work by veteran missionaries, today’s missionaries work with an ever-strengthening Maasai church to spread the gospel. The Maasai themselves are starting new churches and witnessing to their people about the love and power of a God Who wants to meet their needs.
Lead everyone on your church- preschooler, children, youth and adults - to learn more about this fascinating people and how God is working among them. Materials designed to enlighten, educate, inspire, and challenge people of all ages are available in the International Mission Study 2001 series.
