Plot

Joseph Addison Alexander’s “Commentary on the Prophecies of Isaiah” is in a very real sense a classic. This famous expository work first appeared in 1846-1847 to enjoy a wide ministry of usefulness in the nineteenth century. Nevertheless, this eminent study of the prince of Old Testament prophets has lost none of its essential usefulness and appeal to careful Bible students of today. This present reprint is the revised edition of 1875 prepared by the learned Dr. John Eadie of Glasgow , Scotland, who with critical acumen pronounced Alexander’s work as “among the best commentaries on Isaiah of any age or language.” A remarkable linguist commanding a mastery of both Hebrew and Greek, Alexander was eminently qualified as an expositor of the Sacred Text. His comprehensive knowledge of Hebrew makes his work especially useful to students of the original text. But his linguistic abilities were shielded from being narrowly confined to a circumscribed academic sphere by his unusual talent for simplifying and clarifying truth. This latter gift, which unfortunately every great scholar does not possess, gives his work access to a much wider circle of readers. He was a happy combination of a thorough scholar and a skillful popularizer in whom vast learning was mellowed by true evangelical faith and piety. This work, “Commentary on the Prophecies of Isaiah,” is his crowning labour, his imperishable monument.
