A White House spin doctor (Robert DeNiro) works with a Hollywood producer (Dustin Hoffman) to revive a president's approval ratings in the midst of a sex scandal, on the eve of a national election. The two concoct a fake war and recruit actors to play the parts of soldiers and civilians caught in the crossfire. Through the release of well-timed and emotionally compelling “news footage” shot on sound stages using blue screen technology, the conspirators shift media focus away from the president’s sordid encounter and inspire a surge of American patriotism as citizens around the country rally behind the president and the war’s fictional heroes.
