On the outside, sheriff Lou Ford (Casey Affleck) appears to be an everyday hero, watching over his small community and engaged in a stable relationship with Amy Stanton (Kate Hudson), a kind-hearted local schoolteacher. But appearances can be deceiving as Ford slowly but surely reveals his violent, sadistic and sociopathic side. After an abusive relationship with a local prostitute (Jessica Alba) ends in bloodshed, Ford's true side comes to light as he is put under investigation by a suspicious county attorney (Simon Baker).
