When the US civil war ends, the ex- soldier, Britt Canfield (Randolph Scott) accepts a job with the Santa Fe railroad. He is a dedicated worker and he soon becomes the second-in command there. Though he persuades his brothers, Terry (Jerome Courtland), Tom (Peter M. Thompson) and Clint (John Archer) to join the company, they do not obey him, but takes to illegal means, as they are unable to accept their defeat. In the meantime, Britt finds Judith Chandler (Janis Carter), an attractive woman. Her husband was killed during the war. Britt is determined to bring his brothers to books, but the real culprit behind the illegal activities is someone else, a man called Cole Sanders (Roy Roberts).
