David Helfgott (Geoffrey Rush) is rescued by Gillian (Lynn Redgrave) from a homeless life. He tries to regain his sanity through the music he learned as a child. As he begins to explore his talent at the piano, David recalls what led to his shattered state of mind. David was once a child prodigy who was driven by his father (Armin Mueller-Stahl), to learn the piano. His father's abusiveness comes from his experience in the Holocaust. David was saved from his father's abuse by several teachers who witnessed his genius. But in his youth it was the demanding emotional interpretation of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto #3 that caused David to have a mental breakdown. As he slowly plays the piano and approaches both the emotions of his youth and those infused in the piano piece he could not finish, he regains enough mental health to return to concert piano performance again.
