Lt. Cmdr. John Lawrence (Richard Widmark) has been called in to replace a popular commander of a team of underwater demolitions specialists, nicknamed "Frogmen" by other units, during the Second World War. The team resents both his by-the-book attitude as well as his stern presence, but they have to work together in the waters of the Pacific in order to clear the way for some of the biggest operations of the war.
