The Ringo Kid (John Wayne) escapes from prison after he was framed for murder by Luke Plummer (Tom Tyler). The Kid boards a stagecoach headed to Lordsburg, New Mexico in an attempt to escape the authorities. Unfortunately, a marshal (George Bancroft) is traveling on the stagecoach and has him rearrested. Other passengers include a prostitute (Claire Trevor), an alcoholic (Thomas Mitchell), a banker (Barton Churchill), a gentleman (John Carradine), a married woman (Louise Platt), and a salesman (Donald Meek). The passengers encounter danger when Apache warriors attack the group, forcing them to fight back in an effort to save their lives.
