This collection of MGM cartoons feature Tom and Jerry, the cat and mouse from their 1940s and 1950s heyday. Foremost of the fourteen animated features, each running about seven minutes, is their Oscar winner, “The Cat Concerto,” which was controversial as Warner Brothers issued one exactly the same, but featuring Bugs Bunny with a mouse at the piano keyboard. Tom and Jerry won the Academy Award and the lawsuit. The earliest cartoon on the collection is “Yankee Doodle Mouse,” from 1943 which is a World War II propaganda piece. Another interesting animation is the first attempt to combine live action and cartoon from the movie “Anchors Aweigh” and features Gene Kelly dancing with his mouse friend Jerry. Other noteworthy additions to this collection include “Jerry and the Lion,” about the mouse helping a big cat return to Africa. Tom is more featured in “Solid Serenade.”
