Wilby Daniels (Tommy Kirk) visits a museum and accidentally brings home a magic ring. When he speaks the ring's inscription out loud, he turns into a sheepdog. Among other problems, Wilby's father, mailman Wilson Daniels (Fred McMurray), is allergic to and despises dogs. A love quadrangle develops between Wilby, his rival, Buzz Miller (Tim Considine), and two girls Allison D'Allessio (Annette Funicello) and Franceska Andrassy (Roberta Shore). Meanwhile, Wilby's little brother Moochie (Kevin Corcoran), is thrilled to finally have a dog, and helps hide Wilby from their father. The museum curator figures that Wilby must commit an act of heroism in order to return to human form, which he does while in the form of the sheepdog.
