Charlie Anderson (James Stewart) has raised seven children on his Virginia farm in the Shenandoah Valley. He tries to keep his family away from the hardship and devastation of the Civil War that encroaches upon their peaceful valley. His youngest son, Boy (Phillip Alford) gets swept up by the Rebel army, and taken off to fight. The rest of the family leaves home on a mission to find and save their beloved son and brother.
