Before the Nazis start a world war, Captain Karl Ehrlich (John Wayne) tells a British friend how much he dislikes Hitler, but he is sent out of Sydney with a German femme fatale spy Elsa Keller (Lana Turner) as his passenger. He knows his British counterpart (David Farrar), an old friend, is after him, and he wants to avoid combat. His crew is largely supportive of his views (Paul Fix, Tab Hunter, James Arness, Dick Davalos), but his second-in-command Kirchner (Lyle Bettger) is a Nazi scoundrel who may be Ehrlich’s biggest headache as he tries to maneuver away from battles. In the meantime, the Captain is drawn to the sultry passenger.
