In 1943, battle hardened Marine drill Sergeant John Stryker (John Wayne) has to train a bunch of green recruits for the rigors of war. The troops include his former commanding officers’ arrogant and rebellious son Peter Conway (John Agar). During training, Stryker is seen as brutal and uncaring, but when the unit finally sees its first action on the island of Tarawa, the men see why Stryker has been so tough on them. They gain even more respect for their Sergeant when he single handedly destroys a Japanese machine gun bunker that has the unit penned down. Stryker and his men then face their ultimate test in the bloody battle of Iwo Jima.
