When WWII submarine commander Duke Gifford (John Wayne) is forced to leave his dying captain Cmdr. John T. 'Pop' Perry (Ward Bond) behind during a mission, he has to face his own guilty conscience as well as the anger of Navy pilot Lt. Bob Perry (Philip Carey), the late captain's brother.
