Julie (Irene Dunne) and Roger's (Cary Grant) marriage started out without cares or troubles until a tragic accident caused Julie not to be able to have children. Even though they struggle financially, they are able to adopt a girl. A brief illness brings tragedy to the family. They try to regain their happy life by trying to adopt again. This time they are able to adopt a boy. But as circumstances cause emotional pain and separation the marriage begins to falter. Julie looks back over the years of their struggles while listening to records. She ponders whether their marriage will survive.
