Whitey (Dan Duryea) and his infamous gang regularly steal, rob, and torment the railroad and its owner Kimball (Jay C. Flippen), but when they kidnap the rail tycoon’s wife (Elaine Stewart) and a boy (Brandon de Wilde), they call upon Grant McLaine (James Stewart) to save the day. What McLaine discovers is that the nasty gang includes his brother, known as the Utica Kid (Audie Murphy). Entwined in the Western setting, family ties try to overcome the greed of the gang members like Shotgun (Jack Elam) and railroad executives like Kurth (Hugh Beaumont). The McLaine brothers must reconcile, and Grant McLaine wants to take on little Joey as a ward, but the railroad must be built across the vast country first, insuring the safety of the workers.
