Edward Pierce (Sean Connery) is a master criminal, capable of pulling off the biggest and best crimes that Victorian England has seen. After observing the shipment of Crimean Gold to the front lines of France, Edward concocts a daring and bold robbery, one that has never been committed before – the theft from a moving train.
Teaming up with Robert Agar (Donald Sutherland) and Miriam (Lesley-Anne Down), they conspire to copy the three keys needed to open the safe which guards the gold, and then must find a way to the safe, rob its contents, and make their timely getaway – all whilst the train thunders down the track from London to Folkestone.
