In “Africa: the Serengeti” viewers are given a dispassionate glimpse at the interrelated lives of beast and prey. Narrated by James Earl Jones, the story tries to tie together the lives of a herd of wildebeest and their nemesis, lions. Constantly under the possibility of attack by the teams of lionesses, the wildebeest must endure by constant migration. Along the way, they can meet their demise by alligators along the river, or even the more brutal cheetah that may single out the very old or the very young or the sickly. The tale reveals all the ancillary carnivores that feed off the leavings, like the plain vulture, which will clean the bones after lions feed. Even the tribal Africans have had their connections to the wildebeest in history, as a brief lesson shows. Today the modern Serengeti visitor may do it in an air balloon. Whatever way the animals are watched, their lives remain timeless, with constant battles and traditional elements, in their journey to survive.
