Arthur Bach (Dudley Moore) is a millionaire who stands to inherit this fortune if he will marry the socially-correct woman chosen for him: Susan Johnson (Jill Eikenberry). But Arthur is having too much fun, getting drunk and wasting his life. His tireless valet Hobson (John Gielgud) puts up with Arthur and manages to keep him from destroying himself. However, Hobson knows he is getting old and Arthur's refusual to grow up concerns him that he will end up a bumb. When Arthur meets a poor but good-hearted woman, for once he does something right. Hobson realizes Linda Marolla is not of the right social class to satisfy the demands for Arthur to inherit his millions, but she could actually be a companion to him and take care of him. Arthur has to make a grown up decision to follow his heart of love for Linda or waste his life away before it is too late.
