In Walt Disney’s animated version of Aesop’s classic fable The Tortoise and the Hare, the race between the woodland creatures becomes updated as a modern athletic tale. With crowds of other creatures from the forest sitting in the stands, the arrogant and star athlete Hare, complete with college sweater, feels such a race is beneath his dignity and requires little or no effort for victory. The Tortoise resembles a country bumpkin on whom practical jokes are lost because of his pleasant and affable mentality. Along the way the rabbit stops to impress young lady rabbits with his skills in tennis, archery, and baseball. Of course, his delays and personal foibles lead to the plodding turtle to prove the adage about Slow and Steady.
