Bounty hunters Colonel Mortimer (Lee Van Cleef) and Manco (Clint Eastwood) each plan to capture an escaped prisoner for a $10,000 reward. Indio (Gian Maria Volonte) learned from his cellmate the secret of the safe in an “impossible” bank in El Paso. When his men break him out, Indio leads them to El Paso to rob the bank. Both Mortimer and Manco figure out where Indio is headed and make their separate ways there. They become partners despite distrusting each other, and Manco infiltrates the band of robbers. He is sent by Indio to rob another bank as a diversion, while Indio steals the safe. Manco then rejoins Indio’s gang and they meet up with Mortimer, who offers his services as a safe cracker. When Manco and Mortimer try to sneak off with the money, Indio catches them, has them beaten, and then sets them loose to be the fall guys for the robbery. However, the two catch up with Indio and the loot. Mortimer faces off with Indio, shooting him in revenge for a personal matter. Mortimer gets the revenge he wants, and Manco gets the reward money.
