Plot

It is a trait of fiction that its creations are sometimes immortal, capable of surviving multiple deaths. Using this slight of hand, Burgess thankfully resurrects his greatest comedic foil with the help of William Shakespeare. The final Enderby novel could fit into two places in Burgess’ library, being both a modern day comedy and a Shakespearean fantasy. The style is far removed from the previous three (or two) Enderby works, with the vindictiveness and impotence of Enderby replaced with kindheartedness and (misspent) vitality.
