When Alison tells Great Uncle Arthur that she is not happy in her job as a librarian, he impulsively bequeaths his collection of Victorian books to her, plus some money and the use of his Sussex cottage at a peppercorn rent. Urging her to start a lending library of her own, he urges her also to keep up his long-standing feud with the neighbouring house, Larchmere - not an easy resolution to maintain.
