Sonic Highways
In this new series, Foo Fighters commemorate their 20th anniversary by documenting the eight-city recording odyssey that produced their latest, and eighth, studio album.
Foo Fighters founder Dave Grohl directs the series, which taps into the musical heritage and cultural fabric of eight cities: Chicago, Austin, Nashville, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans, Washington D.C. and New York. The band based themselves at a legendary recording studio integral to the unique history and character of each location.
One song was recorded in each city, and every track features local legends. Even the lyrics were developed in an experimental, unprecedented way: Grohl held off on writing them until the last day of each session, letting himself be inspired by the experiences, interviews and personalities that became part of the process.
Dave Grohl and friends discuss the rise of the famous Chicago music scene from the roots blues of Muddy Waters and Buddy Guy to the Rock and roll of Cheap Trick.
Grohl continues his musical exploration in the Washington DC area where influential artists and producers describe DC's Go-Go, Funk, and Punk scenes.
Dave sits down with several household names of country music to discuss Nashville's musical influences and the Nashville sound. Foo Fighters record at Zac Brown's Southern Ground studio.
Dave Grohl travels to The Live Music Capitol of the World to record in the famous KUT 6A Studio. The once affordable music mecca is pricing the artists out of town, the ones that make it an appealing place to live.
The band heads to Rancho De La Luna studio to catch de desert vibe just outside L.A, as well as discuss the important influence of the town in Rock Music Rodney Bingenheimer's Sunset Strip club is also focused.
Dave Grohl talks to Dr. John, Allen Toussaint and Cyril Neville about New Orleans unique music history. The band records with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
Dave Grohl returns to his musical roots, while the Foo Fighters prepare to record at Seattle's Robert Lang Studio with Death Cab for Cutie's Benjamin Gibbard.
The last episode of the series, talking about the most important city in the States. Stories that go from the early 40s until today. Interviews with Rick Rubin, Emmylou, Chris Martin, LL Cool J, Barack Obama. And a real statement about what is happening with the studios business nowadays.
