During the turbulent ‘60s, Jack Slavin (Daniel Day-Lewis) chose to live in a commune on a small island off the East Coast. It is now 1986 and he and his daughter Rose (Camilla Belle) are the only two who still inhabit the once thriving commune. Jack has managed to live self-sufficiently and has chosen to keep his daughter isolated and naïve from the real world. The problem is Rose is growing up and the idyllic existence Jack has fashioned for them is in jeopardy from the outside. Developer Mary Rance (Beau Bridges) has been erecting cracker box houses on the island. The sheltered existence that has been Rose’s life is threatened further when Jack has his girlfriend and her two sons move in. Nothing can stop the sexual tension that erupts in the once peaceful home.
