To make full sense of the Bible, the modern reader needs to know as much as possible about the times when it was written. With this aim, this Atlas is divided into five parts which related to the five main periods -- from 2000 BC to AD 100 -- when the Bible was formed and written. Each part contains general chaptes on the historical, social, economic and religious background plus chapters which place the Biblical material in its porper setting. As well as giving a complete picture of Judaism and Christianity, the book also charts the development of other religions and civilizations, thus placing the Bible in context.
